Welcome to bridgend hockey

Many of the local papers seem to suggest that sport in Wales is all Rugby Union or to a lesser degree Football or Cricket. However it comes as a surprise to some that there is a thriving Hockey scene in the locality and Bridgend is a strong part of this.

Bridgend Hockey Club was founded in 1896 – it is thought that only Newport and Abergavenny are older. In those days it was for men only and had but one side. It was not until about 1967 that a second men’s side was formed and then not until 1982 that the 3rd side was added followed soon after by the 4th . In the early part of this century a ladies’ section was added. The Club now regularly runs four men’s sides and three ladies. The Club also has a strong Youth policy running training and matches for both sexes at age levels from 9 up to 17 years.

Highlights of Bridgend’s history include representing Wales in the European Club competition in Poland in 1993, winning the South Wales cup three times, promotion to the combined West of England/South Wales league and later promotion to its Premier section and in 1994 it was voted “Ogwr Borough Team of the Year”. The club celebrated its Centenary in 1995/6 with several high profile events.

Up to the present time, players of real talent have unfortunately usually moved away to the major Clubs either in England or else to Whitchurch, Cardiff or Swansea in order to gain international honours. However in 1949 Arthur (Jimmy) Jones, who was by all accounts a brilliant forward, gained several Welsh caps whilst representing Bridgend.

Bridgend Hockey Club continues to grow and there is a warm welcome for players and supporters at all levels. It is well known in Welsh Hockey circles as a friendly and sociable club and it is my privilege to be President of the Club.
