21 Oct Under 11s Team Makes It’s Debut !
Bridgend Hockey was delighted to be invited to send an under 11 team to participate in Whitchurch Hockey Club’s tournament last Sunday, their first ever competitive age group matches.
The first match was versus an experienced and skilful Gwent team who played a fast and energetic style which the team struggled to match in the early stages, falling a goal behind quickly. Confidence soared however when Michael Hodges was put through on goal following a super pass from Seren Burgum and he scored to send the enthusiastic crowd into raptures. Gwent came back powerfully and scored 2 more goals to win the match but huge credit to the team and, particularly, 7 year old Adam Davis who was buried in goal keeping kit but still made a couple of fine instinctive saves. He was to be a star throughout.
The second match was versus the hosts, Whitchurch, who have always been well coached from an early age and their skills were on display from the first minute. Determined and courageous defence from Michael Wilks and Tilly Gough meant that Whitchurch never ran away with the game and Bridgend got on the score sheet with a finely taken strike from Seren Burgum. It was another defeat but one could sense that the team were learning and adapting their game very quickly as the two wingers, Luke Davis and Tomos Wooster began to get into the game and make Whitchurch defend.
Canton presented the final match challenge and it was clear that Bridgend were determined to record a win. The passing of the team began to draw expressions of approval from seasoned observers and it was no surprise when Tomos Wooster smashed home his first goal and repeated the trick 5 minutes later. By now the supporters were delirious with goal lust and their appetite was fed with further goals from Seren Burgum and Michael Hodges before half time. The second half saw Bridgend score 3 more goals with Tomos Wooster completing a deserved hatrick, whilst the fearless tackling and passing from the resolute defence of Michael Wilks and Tilly Gough kept Canton down to just 2 goals.
Commenting on his team’s superb debut performance coach Jon Wilks said, “It was a splendid tournament played in great heart and the players improved massively as they learnt the game tactics.”
Special mention to the great support from parents who gave encouragement from the first to last minute. Next tournament is in Abergavenny in November – if we can wait that long!
