09 Feb 3rd XI Match Report – Saturday 8th Feb. 2014
Llanishen and Caerphilly 1; Bridgend ‘B’ 1
Bridgend’s squad for this league fixture against a strong Llan and Caerphilly side included four 13 year olds and two 14 year olds, but all players acquitted themselves well in this adult league game.
With Denver Beer and Rhydian Lewis controlling midfield, good passing released 13 year olds Rhys Bradshaw and Rhys Rubery to attack the opposition, with 14 year old Owen Tuckwell contributing well from the left and 13 year old Matthew Hibbert defending well on the right, as well as joining in to make attacking moves down the flank.
Bridgend did well to thwart attacks from Llanishen, with Tony Price, Derek Jones and Mark Tuckwell intercepting attacks and bringing Denver Beer in to play to start Bridgend’s attacks, from which Rhydian Lewis gave Bridgend a deserved lead with a crisp shot.
Bridgend continued to ring the changes in the second half, with youngsters Owaine Leyshon and Steffan Irranca-Davies linking well with the midfield. Both sides created chances, with Jack Steer going close on two occasions for Bridgend. At the other end, John Thomas and Nick Showell stopped promising attacks from the opposition.
Skipper and goalkeeper Cliff Harrison was brought upon to bring off several good saves during the game, which ended in a draw, but encouraging for Bridgend and their hard working, and fearless, six youngsters.
