08 Jul Bridgend Hockey Club Cricket Day
On a fine summers day two sports clubs from the town Bridgend Hockey Club & Bridgend Cricket Club came together to have a 20/20 fun cricket match. Mixing the teams up from both sports the men and women, fathers, mothers, sons and siblings some of whom had never played cricket before took to the field with the rivalry and stakes for bragging rights extremely high. The first innings were open by Bev Sainsbury and 14 year old Matthew Hibbert who played some aggressive shots from the off. Some tight bowling from Liz Pearce restricted the pair to a handful of runs and the frustration got the better of Bev Sainsbury as she was bowled. Matthew Hibbert went on to hit 6 runs before being excellently caught. In came the cricket clubs own Rob Pearce and Wayne Barrington who steadied the innings and made light of some inexperience bowling from Jo Poupon, Gareth Evans and Jon Murphy who were bowling for the first time. Some excellent wicket keeping from Iuan “IVAN “Bunston….. saved the total from increasing greatly. With the experienced bowling of David Morris, David Knight, Sam Pearce and Adrian Hibbert the wickets tumbled, with Richard knight the only batsman to put up any resistance. A Valiant effort with the bat from Samantha Murphy, Paul Davies and Tom Pearce helped their team reach 85 off their allotted overs.
The second innings began with Jo Poupon and Jon Murphy opening, while young Matthew Hibbert and Rob Pearce were the demon duo with the ball. With the bowlers did their job well supported by their fielders taking catches and stopping everything that was hit towards them. Poupon fell early while Jon Murphy went on to retire on 25 not out, some really tight bowling from Bev “underarm” Sainsbury and Wayne Barrington made it difficult for the new batting pair of Liz Pearce and Gareth Evans to score quickly and both were out trying to increase the run rate. A quick fire 25 from Adrian Hibbert who retired not out, backed up by David Morris took the team within 8 needed off the last two overs, these were left to IVAN and David knight to finish the game off in style. Players of the Match were chosen for each team with Matthew Hibbert playing in his only his second ever game taking it for team 1 for his all-round performance with bat, ball and fielding. For team 2 it was Jon Murphy for his batting performance.
A fantastic day was topped off with a wonderful spread but on by Marion in the pavilion. A return hockey match is now being arranged and a baseball game for later in the summer.
Thanks to all that turned up to play and to the supporters, Martin and Jane Bevan, Steve and Kerry Murphy, Steve and Jane Price (and steve’s mum) Emily Phillips and Justine Cosby, and a massive thanks to David Knight for organising such a great day.
