21 Jun The Great Bridgend Bake Off
Fresh from winning the Team Bath Plate competition last Saturday, Bridgend Men’s Vets travelled to the sunny Swansea seaside today to take part in the Welsh Over 40s Cup.
In conditions more akin to the inside of a Port Talbot blast furnace the initial team of ten men played a strong Penarth squad. Bridgend scored three great goals with Ian Davies, and Adam Knapp both getting on the score sheet and Penarth unable to respond.
The second game of the day was against CarChurch – the combined might of Cardiff and Whitchurch the two biggest teams in Wales. Not daunted by the array of internationals before them, and bolstered with the additional players of John Thomas and Jack Steer, Bridgend played some great hockey. The defence stood firm with Pete Smith and Alun Griffiths repelling attack after attack and midfield dynamos of Paul Davies, Reece Adams and Denver Beer controlling midfield. With seconds to go and in searing heat the Ravens mounted a fast break away attack moving the ball slickly between Jon Catton and Jack Steer who then laid on a perfect cross for Adam Knapp to smash the ball with laser-like accuracy into the roof of the CarChurch net and secure a dazzling 1-0 victory for Bridgend.
A huge effort on day one by the 12 Bridgend players – special mention to Cliff Harrison who kept two superb clean sheets.
And only three more games tomorrow !!
