Bridgend Mens 1st XI 4-2 Lansdown
A dubious start for the Ravens saw a very persistent attack from the visitors from the outset. A few uncharacteristic defensive errors saw Bridgend concede their first goal in 180 minutes of hockey, as Lansdowne committed numbers to overload the ‘D’. Bridgend continued looking rusty, stringing few accurate passes together which ultimately resulted in Lansdowne capitalising and getting their second due to a defensive mix up. Bridgend then realised they had a game on, and closing in on half time a sleeping giant woke. Bridgend won a short corner which was recycled through Jon Rubery, several widow making tackles were made on him, and although the ball ended up in the goal, a penalty stroke had been awarded. Captain David Knight easily slotted this high to the keeper’s left.
The second half saw the Ravens establish themselves, returning to sharp accurate possession heavy hockey. After frustrating the visitors defence, Andrew Jones Snr found himself a gap to weave through, scoring a great solo goal. Not happy to settle for the draw The Ravens continued to press, winning a series of short corners, conditions did not lend themselves to some of Bridgend’s usual routines, so Rhys Owen slipped the ball to Andrew Jones through a crowd who converted his second goal. To cement the victory, another short corner saw a ball played wide left which was delivered to Jones Snr as the first was, he let out a rocket which Nick Anthony guided home.
