Men’s 1sts

Bridgend 1st XI 4-5 Leominster

Having secured league safety last week Bridgend welcomed Leominster to Pencoed. Although the matches outcome was inconsequential it was still played in competitive style. Leominster drew first blood with a well placed short corner, however Michael Hodges hit back soon after with an excellent solo run which culminated in a goal. A series of short corners swung favour back towards Leominster, until Rhydian Cole got on the end of a Kris Holyoake through ball, via Rhodri Owen and volleyed the ball into the roof of the net. Michael Hodges got a second after a superb run, striking past the keeper. With only minutes on the clock and Bridgend at a one goal deficit, Rhodri Owen picked up the ball close to goal, scoring to tie the game. Fortune did not favour Bridgend on this day as with mere seconds to go, an awkward bounce fell in favour of a Leominster forward to sealed victory for his team.

Men’s 2nds

Gwent 7- 2 Bridgend A

Bridgend Travelled with season old legs knowing that Gwent needed a win to secure promotion, meaning this was always going to be a tough game.

Bridgend started positively with Andrew Jones (AJ jr) , Phil Rees a.k.a “Phill Brooks”, Jamie Brooks (Jimbo) and John Rubery – who took an early injury in the line of duty – making way for Tarran Moss to bulk up the weakened back four.

Gwent piled on the pressure early and took on the Midfield of Osian Jones (OJ) , Captain Nick Anthony, Neall Hollis & Andrew Jones (AJsnr) feeling every minute of it.

Matt Tudball and John Catton had the pleasure of testing the Gwent Goalie but had few chances to capitalise on.

The game quickly turned into a Gwent master class of passing, constant pressure and the Bridgend Goalie Adam Hawas, although making numerous saves could only keep the score as low as 7.

Although hard to swallow and with 2 goals going Bridgends way (Scoring 1 Penalty Flick and ending a 3 attempt failure streak), Bridgend rode out the Gwent wave and lost with dignity, congratulating the Gwent team on their promotion.

Bridgend look forward to regrouping and coming back strong. Finishing mid table in a new league sets the target on top 3 or higher next season.

Big thanks all that played for Bridgend 2nd 11 this season, you did us proud.
