Bridgend 1st XI 3 v Chippenham 0

With just four games to go, and with Bridgend top of the league, a win was the only requirement against a Chippenham team who the Ravens drew with earlier on in the season, and after a thoroughly professional performance from the squad, the home side ran out winners by 3 goals to 0, to keep up their fantastic form at the top of the Davis Wood De Cymru and the Marches Division 1. Nick Anthony continued his good goal scoring form with another two goals, while the returning David Knight was also on the score sheet, to secure a well-deserved win going into Sunday’s crunch game against rivals Cardiff.

Cardiff 1 v Bridgend Mens 1st XI 3

This was THE crunch game of Bridgend’s season, as a win would see the Ravens go six points clear of their rivals with two games to play. The game started at a frenetic pace, with both teams struggling to keep possession before Bridgend broke the deadlock with an opportunist goal from David Knight, who finished neatly from a pass from Rhydian Cole after robbing the Cardiff defender of the ball. Bridgend were soon two up, thanks to a second from Knight, but after soaking up some Cardiff pressure in the second half the score line was soon 2-1, as Cardiff looked to secure a late equaliser which was required to keep up their promotion hopes. That wasn’t to be though, as Adam Hawas in the Bridgend goal kept them at bay before Bridgend scored a third goal to secure a fantastic and well deserved three points to take them five points clear at the top of the league, and six points clear of Cardiff, in third place. Captain Rhydian Cole said on the win, “This was a magnificent performance by the team. It’s not just about today’s performance though, the boys have been fantastic all season. We have won six out of six over the last three weekends, meaning we are top of the league, unbeaten away from home this season, and on course for promotion. The minimum requirement now is two wins from our final games to take us to 50 points for the season, before we attempt to defend our Welsh Shield Cup Final on the weekend of 23/24th March in Cardiff against Swansea University. It’s turning into quite a memorable season for the club…”
