Men’s 2s

Bridgend welcomed Gwent to CCYD on a dry January afternoon. However Gwent started the stronger taking a 2 goal lead inside the first 10 minutes. This woke Bridgend up, with the attacking duo of Steve Murphy and Jon Rubery combing with Kris Williams and Andy Schofield to create chances. Bridgend continued to press through Rhodri Owen and Jason Arnold combining to create a goal scorer opportunity for Steve Murphy who could only manage to rattle the woodwork. Bridgend started the second half as they ended the first with Paul Davies and Andy Schofield making problems for the Gwent defenders. As the half went on Gwent defended with all 11 players behind the ball making it difficult for Bridgend to get the all important break through, this however did come with Andrew Jones using all his length to finish cleverly. Bridgend won several short corners as the game went on but on this day were just not clinical enough in front of goal!

Men’s 3s
On balance, Bridgend should have won this game but their final passes too often let them down as Swansea were able to thwart attacks with some good basic skills of tackling efficiently and clearing from defence.

Early exchanges were even, as the Bridgend defence were solid as Derek Jones, Gareth Collier and Steve McIntosh were able to intercept attacks from Swansea, and then allowed Bridgend to mount their own attacks via midfield of Mike John and Rhydian Lewis, to get wingmen Ian Blatchford and Gavin Pound working hard to link with Matthew Arthur and Jeremy Ingram.

Against the run of play, Swansea took the lead, but Bridgend soon equalised when a strong through ball from Rhydian Lewis reached Jack Steer at the haad of the circle, he drew the advancing goalkeeper to pass to Ian Blatchford who scored with a good narrow angled shot.

Play after that was even, but Swansea took the lead again when one of their youngsters scored with a firm reverse stick shot, giving skipper and goalkeeper Cliff Harrison no chance to save.

Bridgend continued to mount attacks, and following a goalmouth scramble, Gavin Pound pounced on the loose ball to strike a firm shot giving Bridgend an equaliser.

No more scoring happened in the second half, which Bridgend dominated but were unable to find the net, although youngster Matthew Daly came very close on two occasions.

Some disappointment for Bridgend, who will be more successful as their close passing game returns.

Gwent ladies 2s 5
Bridgend 2

Was a bit of a long wait for the blues ladies this morning to find out confirmation of the game from the awful ice, but it wasn’t long til they were on their way down to Risca. Bridgend had a strong start to the first game back after Christmas. They missed a few chances, where Gwent succeeded to find the back of the net, but the blues strived on. The second half came fast and so did the goals from both teams. The blues were able to come square with Gwent on the score board but sadly the team from Newport took more of their opportunities. Scorers of the day were Sarah Boyd and Louise Jones.
