Bridgend 0- Cardiff Uni 2
The Ravens played a rearranged league game against fellow promotion contenders Cardiff university. The university team fielded an extremely strong squad, which was bolstered to include a full 16. It was evident the students were to use this advantage and played a very high tempo game. The experienced Cardiff defence made sure Bridgend’s normal access routes to goal were blocked. The Ravens played the ball around successfully, but were unable to manufacture anything of note in the final third, due to the blockade put in place by the students. The pressure from Cardiff resulted in a short corner which fortunately for Cardiff found its way into the goal via a number of deflections. The onslaught continued following this, with Jamie Brooks managing to stop a further three shots on the goal line. A short corner for Bridgend resulted in nothing and was a chance sorely missed. Jacob Hodges came the closest in the first half attempting to round the keeper after a superb run but his angle of attack was made too tight.
The second half saw the fresher legs of the university team continue to pound on the pressure, ill discipline from both teams proved costly towards the numerical advantage on the pitch. Cardiff managed to sneak a second despite Bridgend’s staunch defending, following a counter attack down their right wing.
Bridgend continued to dig deep and the team committed every last drop of energy, quick thinking from Andy Schofield fed Rhodri Owen who found the back of the net, only to have his goal disallowed. As such a truly shattered Bridgend team ended the game at 2-0. A better rested squad will head out to correct the scoreboard next week.
