27 Nov U13 Match Report 22-11-15
Under 13 boys – Pencoed 22nd November 2015
Bridgend turned up to their home pitch to be greeted by warm November sunshine with a long six game, 4 team double round robin schedule ahead.
First up a good Swansea team, but Bridgend turned round at half time 2 – 0 to the good thanks to some excellent finishing by Mat Tudball and some crucial defensive interceptions by Michael ‘the rock’ Hodges. The match though proved to be a true game of two halves, with Bridgend conceding 3 second half goals to narrowly lose.
Next came Brecon and a closely fought match ended 2 – 1 to Brecon. Signs though of a team forming with some slick passing and skills in midfield with Ben Hughes, Mat Tudball and Ellis Haines.
Third up a scrappy game of few chances against Abergavenny. The opposition winning 1 – 0 with a hotly contested goal in the dying seconds.
The annoyance at this loss proved to be the turning point!
Knowing they could get results, Bridgend went into the Swansea re-match full of confidence, but turned around at half time 3 – 0 down. Only some fine saves from ‘Keeper Dan Leyshon kept the score down. In a complete reversal of the previous encounter, it was Bridgend who turned it on in the second half. Excellent defensive work from Steve Mansell, Michael Hodges, Cody Evans and Dan Leyshon kept Swansea out. Wonderful skills from Mat Tudball, Ellis Haines and Luke Davies set up chance after chance. Ben Hughes proved to be the star and netted 4 second half goals, with Mat Tudball getting the fifth. An excellent 5 – 3 win that was rightly celebrated.
With the wind in their sails, Bridgend took on Brecon for the second time and didn’t disappoint. Excellent defensive displays from Michael Hodges, Steve Mansell and Cody Evans kept the opposition at bay. Meanwhile James Tudball and Ellis Haines stormed forward from midfield and set up Ben Hughes and Mat Tudball for a goal apiece. Brecon pulled a goal back but Ellis Haines finished the game off with an excellent finish and his first goal for the team! A great 3 – 1 result.
Last up Bridgend faced Abergavenny, with a real desire to turn around the result from earlier in the day. Aber took an early lead, but this jolted Bridgend into action. Michael Hodges took the opportunity to come forward and add his weight to attacking play, with Mat Tudball and Ben Hughes netting one apiece again to clinch the game 2 – 1.
An excellent performance that the team should be proud of!
