Wheely Good Performance by Bridgend Under 13s

Bridgend Under 13s were up early dawes for their latest cycle of matches at the Velodrome situated in Newport’s International Sports Village.
The hockey tour de Cymru involved games against Whitchurch, Gwent and Canton.

Our pelaton of players donned their yellow jerseys (more mustard really) with pride and raleighed round to pull off some notable results. The chain of events unfolded with a 6-5 victory against Whitchurch, which saw Ben Hughes puncture the Whitchurch defence to score the winning goal in the last 20 seconds with Timothy Hodges, Sam Duncombe and Matthew Tudball contributing fine efforts to the score sheet.

Canton proved tougher opposition and soon had the Bridgend team back-pedaling. But the defensive qualities of Will Davies and Tom Hill and excellent shot stopping, Dan Leyshon, restricted Canton to a 2-0 lead.
At half time the coach spoke to the team, who were, by now starting to get tired. Despite showing the effects of an uphill climb they cranked up the pressure and managed to get a grip on the game pulling a goal back through a superbly taken solo effort by Timothy Hodges.

Clearly in the right frame of mind, the final game saw Bridgend back in the saddle against Gwent in a game that provided exciting end to end hockey with Stephen Mansell, Jack Hayes and Michael Hodges creating several chances. Despite stepping up a gear in the final minutes Bridgend were pipped at the bell 5-3.

A thoroughly entertaining morning with great support from the parents and another display of teamwork and skill from all the players.
